Why does Windows show a security warning?
When you run a newly released application, Windows may display a SmartScreen message such as "Windows protected your PC". This does not mean the file is unsafe.
Microsoft SmartScreen builds a reputation score for each application based on how many users have downloaded and run it. Brand-new releases — even ones that are correctly digitally signed — start with little reputation, so SmartScreen may show a caution prompt until enough installs have accumulated. This is normal for legitimate new software and the warning goes away over time.
AirLink Windows builds carry an Authenticode digital signature — Windows displays the publisher as AIRLink — and we publish a SHA-256 checksum for every build so you can confirm the file is genuine before running it.
How to continue installing
- If you see the blue SmartScreen dialog, click More info.
- Confirm the publisher is shown as AIRLink.
- Click Run anyway to continue the installation.
If you would like to verify the download first, follow the checksum instructions below.
Verifying the SHA-256 checksum
This applies to the builds we distribute directly — Windows and Android. The iOS and macOS apps are installed from the App Store and signed by Apple, so no manual check is needed.
On Windows, open PowerShell in the folder with the installer and run:
Get-FileHash .\AIRLinkVPN-Setup-x64.exe -Algorithm SHA256
On macOS or Linux (to check the APK), run:
shasum -a 256 AIRLink.apk
Compare the output with the SHA-256 value published on the Download page. If they match, the file is intact and unmodified.
Frequently asked questions
How do I connect for the first time?
Install AirLink for your platform, open the app and sign in. Choose a server location from the list and press Connect. When the status shows "Connected", your traffic is encrypted.
Which operating systems are supported?
AirLink is available for Windows 10/11, macOS 12 or later, Android 8.0 or later, and iOS 15 or later. See the Download page for exact requirements.
What should I do if I can't connect?
Try these steps in order: check that your internet works without the VPN; switch to a different server location; disconnect and reconnect; restart the AirLink app; make sure the app is updated to the latest version. If the problem continues, email support@airlink-vpn.com with your platform and app version.
Why does Windows show a security warning during install?
New signed applications temporarily show a SmartScreen prompt while they build reputation with Microsoft. AirLink builds are digitally signed and Windows shows the publisher as AIRLink. See the full explanation above for how to continue.
How do I verify that my download is genuine?
For the builds we distribute directly (Windows and Android), the Download page lists a SHA-256 checksum: compute the hash of the file you downloaded and compare it to the published value. The iOS and macOS apps are distributed through the App Store and signed by Apple. Commands are listed in the verification section above.
Does AirLink keep logs of my activity?
No. We do not record your browsing history, DNS queries or the destinations you connect to. See our Privacy Policy for the full details of what we do and do not collect.
How do I uninstall AirLink?
Windows: open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find AirLink and choose Uninstall. macOS: quit the app and move it from Applications to the Trash. Android / iOS: press and hold the app icon and choose Uninstall / Remove App.
